{"id":147,"date":"2017-10-18T08:39:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T12:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"\/blog\/?p=147"},"modified":"2024-01-30T12:17:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T17:17:41","slug":"meet-our-goats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driftstone.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/18\/meet-our-goats\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet our Goats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_150\" style=\"width: 171px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150\" class=\"wp-image-150\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0684-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.driftstone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0684-1.jpg 2870w, http:\/\/www.driftstone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0684-1-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.driftstone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0684-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.driftstone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_0684-1-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hazel and Julie Marie Photo Courtesy of Jeff Ackerman<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A pygmy goat makes a great farm pet!\u00a0 They are the type of goats we have in our corral.\u00a0 The pygmy is perfect for our campground and our changing seasons as they are known to adapt well to climates.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take a closer look into the history of these cute gals.<\/p>\n<p>This miniature domestic goat breed was spawned from the west African dwarf goat in Africa, transported by the British during the Colonial Era to Europe and then imported to the United States in the 1950&#8217;s to be used specifically for zoos and animal research.\u00a0 Once in the United States they were found to be ideal animals for petting zoos and pets as they are meek, mild and friendly.<\/p>\n<p>One feature that sets our nannies, or female goats, apart are their coloring.\u00a0 There are seven breed standard approved colors for United States pygmies: caramel with black markings, caramel with brown markings, brown agouti (a gene that controls the distribution of black pigment in the hair of animals), grey agouti, black agouti, black with white markings, and solid black.\u00a0 This type of miniature goat loves greens and grains for their diet.\u00a0 They require fresh water, a shed, open area to jump and play and a companion but not necessarily of the same species.<\/p>\n<p>Driftstone has had a number of pygmy goats over the years and even had the opportunity to raise goats from birth, an unexpected surprise with the adoption of a goat.\u00a0\u00a0Hazel is one of those baby goats, born February 16, 2011. Julie Marie was gifted to Driftstone in November 2009 when she was 8 months old.\u00a0 These special pets are a fun addition to the campground.
